Andorra Transportations

In 2008, Andorra has a total of 320 km network of roads. The main road to the north (France) goes through the Envalira pass, which is 2,409 m high but nevertheless open all year round as it has a tunnel as well.

A north-south highway links Andorra la Vella with the Spanish and French borders. Secondary roads and trails also cross the border but are sometimes closed in winter because of deep snows.

There are no railways in Andorra, although the government is considering a new public transport system, "Metro Aeri". This would be an elevated cable metro system that would glide above the city's river.

Buses, the principal means of mass transit, provide regular service to Seo de Urgel and Barcelona in Spain, and to Perpignan in France. Among several cable cars, the most important operates between Encamp and Engolasters Lake. Vehicles from neighbouring countries transport most merchandise.

Andorra does not have commercial airports, but the airport at Seo de Urgel is only 20 km from Andorra la Vella. The nearest international airports are at Lleida, Spain, located 160 km from Andorra, Barcelona, Spain (215 km from Andorra) and at Toulouse, France, 165 km away. There is a daily bus service from the Barcelona and Toulouse airports to Andorra.

There are, however, three heliports – in Arinsal, La Massana, and Escaldes-Engordany – that provide commercial helicopter services.
